When you visit Kaohsiung's Yancheng District, tasting the local street food is a must — and Dagouding Milkfish Rice Noodle Soup is one of those classic old-school eateries you shouldn't skip. Their signature milkfish belly paste, milkfish balls, braised pork rice, pan-fried fish belly and fish cake (olen) are all worth a try. Everything is delicious and cheap, so the place is usually packed around weekend lunchtime and you may end up sharing a table with other diners.

The only thing to keep in mind: the shop sits inside an alley of Yancheng First Public Market (Google Maps link), so it can be a little tricky to find. The dining area also gets warm — a bowl of hot soup will easily leave you sweating — so I recommend coming in the cooler morning hours~

A Yancheng Must-Eat: Dagouding Milkfish Rice Noodle Soup

Getting to Dagouding Milkfish Rice Noodle Soup is easy: take the MRT to Yanchengpu Station, leave via Exit 4, and it's about a 5-minute walk. There's plenty of scooter parking nearby, so arriving by scooter is convenient. If you drive, you'll need to find street parking or use the multi-story parking garage a bit further away (Google Maps link).

Menu

Check the menu, line up, and order directly with the owner. Everything is cheap and tasty, so feel free to try whatever catches your eye. The fish balls usually sell out early — come early if they're your thing. I also highly recommend the milkfish belly paste rice noodles, and if you love rice noodles, add an extra bowl of plain rice noodles.

Bonus: for any soup dish, you can ask the owner for a free broth refill!

Milkfish Belly Paste Rice Noodle Soup

My usual order is the milkfish belly paste rice noodles. It comes loaded with fish — I often end up stuffed — but the portion of noodles is small, so noodle lovers should add a bowl of plain rice noodles (NT$20).

In the last couple of years they've offered a dipping sauce combo of wasabi + soy sauce paste + broad bean chili paste. It pairs perfectly with the fish paste and fish balls — don't forget to dip!
