SmileyCloud (微笑白雲): A Samoyed Village Away from the City

Thanks to Instagram's algorithm, SmileyCloud has gone a little viral lately. It is an interactive park full of Samoyeds and pedigree cats — if you love hanging out with big dogs, come give it a try, and it is great for kids too since Samoyeds are famously gentle giants. Even if cats and dogs are not really your thing, it still makes a nice outing for the views up on the Dapingding plateau. Just do not come with high expectations for the food! All in all, about two hours here is plenty.

Getting There

SmileyCloud sits on Dapingding in Xiaogang District (Google Maps link), which is quite a way from the city center. The easiest option is to drive or ride a scooter — the park has its own parking with a good number of spaces, and it is easy to find a spot.

If you are taking public transport, your best bet is the MRT to Siaogang Station and then a taxi ride of about 12 minutes. You could also take a bus to Dapingding Park and walk over, but that really takes a while — I would not recommend it.

The Grounds

The entrance is quite small and there is a cap on how many visitors can be inside at once, so you queue on site — as people leave, the same number are let in. I waited in line at the entrance for about 15 minutes. Have a read of the entry rules before you go in!

The park itself is not huge, but because of the visitor cap it never feels crowded — it is a comfortable space to wander around. To see the Samoyeds, head to the artificial lawn in the middle, or go into the dog room to interact with the leashed dogs. Although the grounds look reasonably spacious, the facilities and landscaping feel a bit old and sparse — let's say the aesthetics could use some work — and many areas on the second floor look messy, like they have not been properly tidied up. Hopefully the owners will keep improving things over time.

There are three dining areas: the outdoor area on the first floor, plus indoor and outdoor areas on the second floor. The second floor has a great view out over the city from Dapingding. None of the cats or dogs come into the dining areas, so you do not have to worry about them stealing food or bothering you while you eat.

Cat Room｜Dog Room

The animals are split between a dog room and a cat room. The dog room is on the first floor and houses mostly leashed dogs — almost all Samoyeds, with a few other breeds mixed in. This is where you can get those photos of yourself surrounded by a fluffy pack; a staff member has to open the door for you and accompany you inside.

The cat room, next to the second-floor indoor dining area, is home mostly to pedigree cats. You need to sign up to go in — we checked at 4:00 and slots were already booked out to 6:30, so we gave up on the spot. Honestly, watching from outside is perfectly fine. According to the sign at the door, if you fall for a cat during your visit, you can buy it and take it home.

How to Order｜Menu

The minimum charge at SmileyCloud is NT$250 per person, NT$150 for kids aged 6-12, and free for under-6s — staff at the entrance will ask your children's ages to work out which rate applies. Once inside, staff hand you a table marker; find your seat, then head to the counter to order. There are paper menus next to the ordering counter you can take back to your table. The nice part is that the full NT$250 counts toward your order, and the staff will double-check that you have hit the minimum.

I went during a long weekend and waited about 30 minutes for our food, so factor that into how long you plan to stay — best to place your order first and then go play with the dogs.

Milk Tea｜Sweet Potato Latte｜Korean Corn Dog

As two adults our minimum spend was NT$500, and two drinks plus two Korean corn dogs came to exactly NT$500. I watched a bigger group spend ages at the counter figuring out how to hit their minimum. Knowing the price helps cover the dogs' care, though, it does not feel too expensive.

The food is so-so and the drinks are average, but the Korean corn dogs were actually pretty tasty — just a little cold by the time they arrived.
