HappyHill sits about a 15-minute drive northeast of downtown Chiayi, or roughly ten minutes after exiting National Freeway 3 (Google Maps link). It has a 4.3-star rating on Google. Unlike typical downtown cafés, this one sits up on a hill with wide-open grounds and lush greenery — they even grow their own flowers. Order a coffee and a dessert, spend the afternoon chatting with friends and family, and you'll leave feeling wonderfully relaxed.
The owner is very particular about the food: every set meal is thoughtfully designed and delicious, with well-balanced flavors that never feel heavy. The ingredients for the desserts and breads are carefully sourced too — milk imported from Japan and butter imported from France — and you really can taste the extra aroma and richer flavor. Every friend I've brought here has loved it. Yet! High-quality food shows up in the prices, which lean expensive — just think of it as covering the upkeep of the grounds and the service!
Note that opening hours are 10 am to 6 pm — they mainly serve lunch and afternoon tea, and dinner is not available, so don't show up at the wrong time! For indoor dining, remember to reserve by phone first. Dining time is 90 minutes; if you linger to chat you'll be moved to the outdoor area, so if you want to stay longer, check with the owner first!

HappyHill (幸福山丘): A One-of-a-Kind Container Estate Café
HappyHill is close to the freeway interchange and not far from downtown Chiayi, so it's easy to reach by car or scooter, and there's a parking lot on site. The final stretch up to the entrance is fairly steep, though — if you're bringing elderly family members, consider driving up first to drop them off, then heading back down to park.
Indoor / Outdoor Dining Areas
The indoor dining area is spacious and comfortable, with big floor-to-ceiling windows — when there's a light rain, the atmosphere is wonderful.
The outdoor dining area is mainly for coffee and desserts. When your dining time is up and you want to keep chatting, you'll usually be “invited” out here — but there's plenty of shade, so it generally doesn't get too hot. We stayed out here for another hour and it was actually quite pleasant.
The Outdoor Estate-Style Garden
The outdoor estate-style garden is spacious — a full loop takes about 15 minutes. Some people wander down while waiting for their food, and a stroll after your meal is lovely too.

Set Meal Menu & Desserts
The set-meal menu offers seven options (as of the May 2025 menu), including a vegetarian lion's mane mushroom sesame oil hot pot, so there's a choice for every taste. Everything we tried was delicious — I especially recommend the borscht-style beef pot; the beef soup is really good~
The owner is very warm and always points out that their desserts and breads are made with premium dairy products — and you really can taste the difference. Do order a slice of cake and see for yourself.
The Meals and Desserts We Tried
The borscht-style beef pot and the lion's mane mushroom sesame oil hot pot were both excellent. The beef short ribs and milkfish belly were what my family ordered — if you like torched beef or you're a fish person, give them a try.
